Great Outdoor Challenge - Afterschool Gardening

For all of my Waldorf Afterschooling friends. When my girls were little, I also did my best to supplement their afterschool experience while using traditional schools. Here is a post I am resharing from 8 years ago (wow!) to inspire you to do the same:

One of the things I try very hard to do with the girls is to make sure that they are able to get a good amount of outdoor time after school. This is one of the bigger challenges I face as a waldorf-inspired parent who is not using a waldorf school or homeschooling. The girls get home around 3:30 and they are tired, hungry and have homework. But if it fits into our afternoon - I try very hard to get them some free time outside to "shake off" their day.
As a waldorf parent and teacher, I do my best to foster a love of nature and appreciation of the natural, wild, untamed, deep rooted world around us in my own children and the children I care for in my nursery program. I know that they will be the ones left here after I am long gone... what I teach them now, they will teach their own children and carry into a future WAY beyond myself... and they are the only hope for our planet, the human race and the future. This is what I try to tell parents and caregivers... your job is SO extremely important... the ripple effects can truly change the world.

There were so many leaves and acorns in our garden. We raked, picked, shoveled and dug... we're getting ready to plant and the girls are getting excited. We have four square foot boxes and each girl is in charge of one. They will make sure their box is planted, tended to, weeded (not many weeds with square foot gardening), watered, picked and cared for each day.

The daycare children will help when the girls are at school by watering and caring for our garden as well. We also have a lot of other areas where we will be planting herbs, flowers, strawberries and lots of other fun things!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this year is OUR YEAR for a lot of little green thumbs at Little Acorn Learning :) Wish us luck!

Great Outdoor Challenge - Up and At 'Em

This morning we got up and got dressed and headed out early.

Two of my girls are in track & field this year and this weekend they have their first 'meet' so they wanted to practice running.

We headed over to their school to practice the distances they chose to compete in.

Then, of course, we had to spend some time on the playground...

A silly song my Nanny used to sing me when we went to the playground:

See Saw
Knock on my door
Who's there?
Papa (my grandpa)
What does he want?
A glass of beer (lol)
Where's his money?
In my pocket
Where's your pocket?
In my pants
Where's your pants?
I LEFT THEM HOME!!!!
My girls know that one by heart. Nanny would be proud.

Examining...
Then back in the car to bring Dee and her girlfriends on an adventure. I've been in the car all week with these teens!

Each spring break they do a bunch of silly things. Today's idea was to get completely dressed up and pack along silverware, a tablecloth, a battery operated candle and flowers - go to a fast food restaurant - order with class - make up a beautiful table and enjoy -
They got so many crazy looks. Fun times!

Great Outdoor Challenge - Earthplace and Nature Hike

Today we took a ride up to this wonderful little space called Earthplace.

Inside they had so many wonderful opportunities to teach children about the natural world.

Some fun games, puzzles and toys.

Here Keira is counting the rings on these tree stumps.

A spring animal and nature display.

Outside in the playground Brianna found monkey bars just her size.

Then we went on a hike. This trail we started off on is a wheel accessible area so handicapped adults and children can still enjoy a nature hike.

We went a bit deeper in..

The girls were hiking along as if they knew their destination.

Especially Maia... she was always so far ahead of us, calling us to "come on" and "this way".. or "look at this guys!"...

When we returned we hit another outdoor play area to burn some more energy...

Then had a little snack and drink before the long drive home.
Tomorrow is Earth Day - any fun plans??

Great Outdoor Challenge - Petting Farm

Today was so amazingly beautiful. The clouds were breathtaking wherever we went.
We went to a local place to get farm fresh groceries. They also have a little petting farm there. The girls really loved the animals.

But Keira made such a wonderful point... something I think about often... how happy are these animals staying at this petting farm? The outside of their shelter is purely concrete. The girls agreed that they should at least have natural grass to roam on.
I think exposing children to animals is a beautiful thing to offer but if we do so, I think it is important for us to remember that they are not put here purely for our enjoyment. Is this considered free range?

Nonetheless... it was a fun day - and we soaked up every precious moment together and talked about some deep issues.

The intuitive nature of children is so pure... I'm proud of my girls for thinking such deep thoughts and for being concerned for other living things and our environment. I work hard to foster that compassion within them. I hope the next generation continues to think this way.
What's your opinion?

Great Outdoor Challenge - Finding Our Roots

Today Keira and I spent over 2 hours weeding our garden areas. She became very fascinated with the different roots that each weed had. This one in particular was huge :)

I love how she enjoys working in the garden and doesn't mind getting dirty or putting in a little effort. She genuinely enjoys spending time with me and it makes my heart full.

I wonder if she will have a garden one day when she is all grown up. I hope so.. I hope I get to see it... and I hope she has the chance to enjoy the same special moments with her own children as we have had together.

Great Outdoor Challenge - Cleaning Up Fort

Keira spent some of this cloudy day removing all of the fort furniture and sweeping it out ...
while Brianna and Maia explored in the woods...

We are looking forward to a week off together to just enjoy our home and backyard.

Happy Spring Break!

Great Outdoor Challenge - Neighborhood Walk

Today was my day off and a perfect day for a walk. Brianna and I savored the quiet time together and went exploring around our neighborhood.
Brianna saw my camera and said "Mommy are you taking pictures?"... I said "Yes... of all the pretty things we see on our walk"... so these are the very pretty things Brianna thought we should take a photo of today on our walk together...

When we arrived back home we found our cat Meeko waiting for us on our front porch...

Meeko has a little problem... she meows CONSTANTLY.... I mean every single second. To the point where I have to place her in the laundry room so she can calm down and be quiet at night (you may wonder why our female cat is called 'meeko'... that's a different post LOL).
You can see from these photos she is just talking and talking and talking... I guess she has a lot to say... :)

It didn't take long for Brianna to understand Meeko's language...
xoxo
be sure to enjoy and savor your moments 'off' this week too!
