Recycling Prom Night

It's that time of year when girls all over are searching for that perfect dress. My teen's junior prom is coming up soon and she is also attending her boyfriend's senior prom. This past weekend she went dress hunting at the mall with some of her girlfriends. After four hours of trying on dress after dress - the 'perfect' one was over $200!!! And she still needed another! Needless to say - she needed a mommy intervention.... Luckily, my teenager is pretty cool and was excited about the idea of doing dress hunting in our local consignment shop. I would have taken her back to the mall for less expensive options if she didn't find anything but to me there is something so fun about finding a one-of-a-kind dress that can be used again. It's not even all about the cost... it just seems like such a waste. Let's face it - almost all of those dresses will likely only be worn that one night.... This is the ultimate recycling.

We were so excited to have SO many dresses to choose from! I won't tell which ones she picked now... but she was able to find two beautiful dresses for HALF the price of the one she found at the mall.

And she will most definitely be the only girl at her dance wearing that dress each night.
And the hunting was fun!
We treated ourselves to Indian food with half our 'saved' money afterwards.

The best thing is that we can bring these dresses BACK again next year and consign them to make back some of the money we spent, leaving a beautiful dress there for another girl going to prom.

Teaching Handwork

Today I taught Maia how to knit. She is such a sweet girl and so easy to teach.
She is patient and listens. She picked it up in 10 minutes and has been knitting ever since.
She LOVES it!
I love watching my girls spending time like this together... I can imagine them as mothers themselves one day knitting for their own children or even teaching other children to knit. I love that, in my life with tasks like these, I can send a piece of me and my love into a future that they will live in. It's a spiral of love that begins now and winds its' way to them in a future far, far away from here and now. One that I may or may not see... but a piece of me will be there - starting from now...
Brianna is my last little girl left to teach how to knit. She'll have to wait until she is closer to seven, but for now my Keira taught her step by step how to finger knit and she loves having her own special yarn to take out when the other girls are working on their projects.

Little Eyes Upon You

There are little eyes upon you
and they're watching night and day.
There are little ears that quickly
take in every word you say.

There are little hands all eager
to do anything you do;
and a little child who's dreaming
of the day he'll be like you.

You're the little child's idol
you're the wisest of the wise.
In his little mind about you
no suspicions ever arise.

He believes in you devoutly,
holds all you say and so.
He will say and do, in your way
when he's grown up just like you.
There's a wide-eyed little child
who believes you're always right;
and his eyes are always opened, and he
watches day and night.
You are setting an example
every day in all you do;
for the little child who's waiting
to grow up to be like you.
"A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove ... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child. "

Happy Spring Equinox!

What the Robin Told

The wind told the grasses,
And the grasses told the trees.

The trees told the bushes,
And the bushes told the bees.

The bees told the robin,
And the robin sang out clear:

Wake up! Wake up! Spring is here!

The Return of Spring

Now spring returns, and all the earth
Is clad in cheerful green;
The heart of man is filled with mirth,
And happiness is seen.

The violet rears its modest head,
To welcome in the spring,
And from its low and humble bed
Doth sweetest odors bring.

The birds are warbling in the grove,
And flutter on the wing,
And to their mates in notes of love
Responsive echoes sing.

Far as the eye can view, the hills
Are clad in verdure bright;
The rivers and the trickling rills
Are pleasant to the sight.

Nature another aspect wears,
Stern winter's reign is over;
While everything the power declares
Of Him whom we adore.

Early Spring Table & Catching Leprechauns

The Coming of Spring

I am coming, little maiden,
With the pleasant sunshine laden;
With the honey for the bee,
With the blossom for the tree,
With the flower and with the leaf;
Till I come the time is brief.

I am coming, I am coming,
Hark! The little bee is humming...
We put together our early spring table. I am not yet calling it our nature table as we are hoping to add some natural elements over the next few days. But this is our coming of Spring celebration table... and our sweet postcard of girls catching a leprechaun... we have prepared tonight to catch our very own leprechaun too.

The girls made a leprechaun out of beeswax as well as a little bunny.

And we made our bunny a little home with green wool roving..

Last year, the girls worked in Daddy's workshop to make a very elaborate leprechaun trap

This year I let the girls go about things on their own a bit more... they asked for a shoebox and that was that!
But they wanted to use both traps to increase their chances LOL
And they are SO excited.
I wonder what will happen... I bet if he gets away again, they will at least get his chocolate gold coins...;)

Big sister came home from work and was interested in all of the excitement...
How will you celebrate?

Lately...

I've been so busy. Caring for these little busy bees...and trying to find balance with my writing.
I did manage to FINALLY finish Brianna's sweater... OMG this thing took forever and it has so many mistakes! See back HERE for the history.

But alas, here it is.. and she will not even wear it half the time!
Here are a few fun little photos from our home and daycare:

We are so excited Spring is around the corner. So much of our snow has melted and today we had our first real fun day of play outside in a very long time. We were even able to use the swings and play set.
Now to get back to that writing - March Newsletter is on it's way and April Enrichment guide is in the works!
