Share Your Holiday Traditions - A Giveaway!

This past Sunday was the first day of Advent and whether or not Advent fits within your family customs, the time leading up to the Winter Solstice and Christmas is a good time for contemplation, going within and working through unresolved issues in your heart.

In the Waldorf tradition, the weeks leading up to Advent are celebrated by creating reverence for each of the four different kingdoms: stones (earth), plants, animals and mankind.  There is something about this holistic look at this time of year that speaks to me so deeply and I do my best to use this time to dig deeper spiritually.

There are many traditions and customs during this season that families, schools and churches recognize.  Advent wreaths are often used with candles that are lit each Sunday leading up to Christmas time.  Baking cookies, lighting a menorah or adding an ornament to a Jesse Tree each day are other traditions that come to mind.

My family has begun our own unique traditions that I've shared in the Advent and St. Nicholas Festival E-Book such as our Advent Kindness Clock which includes a little act of kindness that can be done each day leading up to Christmas.

We also created a beautiful Advent Wall Spiral where my daughters place a special star each day of Advent time.

I would love to hear about the traditions and customs in your family this time of year.

In the comments section below, share with us your family traditions leading up to the Winter Solstice and Christmas.  On the second Sunday of Advent (Sunday, December 9th), in the evening, we will randomly choose three winners to receive a FREE copy of our Advent and St. Nicholas Day Festival Book or another of your choice!  Be sure to check back here to see if you won.

Good luck!

Celebrate the Winter Solstice and Win a Free E-Book By Sharing Your Ideas!

The Winter Solstice is here and I love looking back on some of the beautiful ways we have celebrated this special equinox as well as many of the beautiful ideas included in our winter e-books at Little Acorn Learning.

Over the upcoming months, the sun will climb higher, our days will become longer and filled with more warmth.  The solstice is a wonderful time to try to slow down and be more mindful of what is going on both in the world around you as well as deep inside of you.  This is something I really need to focus on in my own life as well.

There are beautiful poems, stories and books you can share with the children during this magical festival.  Some of my favorite books to share are:

Forest Preschool and An Identification Contest Win a FREE E-Book~

I'm back to doing my Forest Preschool program in town and I have come to realize that I've been focusing on some really important things lately but I have really missed working with children.

Every Thursday my friend and I do a craft, hike, scavenger hunt, lunch and activities with the children at a local park across from the library.

We go to a different part of the park each week and the children are so sweet and have the best time.  This session only had four children enroll. We also have a Nature Club program beginning on Saturdays for older children. I hope we can attract more children in the area and grown the program.  It's so important for children to learn to appreciate the natural world and their local area.

I'm hoping that I can gather a group of parents interested in another similar program so I can tailor it to their needs.

Today we took a walk up and visited our town's community garden.  The children thought it was pretty neat that people shared a garden together.   I've never visited there before today so it was nice for me to see too. I have my own veggie garden but really love the idea of sharing a common space and any extra produce can be donated to our local food pantry.

Oh, by the way!!!!.... I AM GETTING CHICKENS!  I've wanted them for so long and I was finally able to wear my husband down enough for him to give in.  I cannot wait.  I told my little preschoolers that maybe they can help me name the chickens and come visit them.  They should hatch next Wednesday and I will have baby chicks late next week.  I'll be sure to document my adventure :)

We came across many cool discoveries today.  A beautiful flower that I believe came from one of the trees above us...

A little inchworm...

And JUST as we were leaving to meet parents we found this little guy!  In all my years working outside in this area, I've never seen anything remotely close to it.  Connecticut is not crawling with lizards and reptiles under our feet so it was a rare treat to see...

He was tiny.. maybe 2".  Can you do some research with your children and identify him?  If you homeschool or like to supplement your child's education with nature learning - use this as a fun opportunity to let your child do some research either online or at the local library.

When your child thinks he or she knows what the name of this little guy is... post it in the comments of this post along with your child's first name and location. You can also share a link if you want. Come back here on Monday, June 1st and we will randomly pick a few of the comments to WIN a free e-book of your choice from Little Acorn Learning!

Remember to let your child do the work - winners will be random and not based on the correct answer.

Best of luck!

The Winners of SPRING...

I just got home from SUCH a long day. One of my daughters was part of an Odyssey of the Mind team and today was the final competition. We have been working SO hard for months and while we didn't win this year, our town won BIG time and we are so very proud of all of our teammates.

It's been a lot of work. I volunteer a lot but this was honestly one of the biggest challenges/commitments I've ever had to face working with a young group toward a goal. It wasn't always easy but we really did great and I am so proud of our team.

The snow has finally stopped falling in Connecticut (on the first day of Spring) so I guess I can announce our giveaway winners now.  f your comment is listed below, please email us at info (at) littleacornlearning.com with your name and the fact that you won a FREE Spring Festivals E-Book and we will send it your way!

Oh... I should admit, I had a non-processed SLIP!  I've been so so good and I even brought all clean snacks for myself today along with a salad.  But, after hour 4 or 5 I caved and grabbed a handful of my daughter's Doritos as we were waiting at the competition.

AND.THEY.WERE.DELICIOUS!!!!

But, I'm back on track tomorrow. Progress, not perfection.  xoxo

Thank you all for participating and... HAPPY SPRING - wherever you are - (even if it's still snowing!)

I am a homeschooling mama of two adventurous little boys! We live in the Pacific Northwest in beautiful Coeur D'alene Idaho. We noticed today the first little blooms of flowers in our backyard. The boys have been busy building our gnomes little homes out of bark and pinecones. We are all ready for our little woodsy friends to come out and play!

I teach a Nature and Art Based Kindergarten in Saskatchewan, Canada. We've had unusually warm weather for the last few months, and were enjoying lots of puddles and mud right up until today - the first day of Spring - we got a bunch more snow. My class and I have been celebrating diversity - learning about Rainbows, and we decided to paint the snow. I diluted some tempra paint in squirt bottles, and we painted the snow all around our school yard, then some boulders, as well. When we came inside, I had set up a story called "The Rainbow and the Antelope" to share a creation myth introducing seeds (and how to plant them) - we planted popcorn to start in our indoor garden.

It's my son's 3rd birthday, and I remember walking to the hospital in a tank top and shorts to deliver! Same day, 3 years later, it is snowing and beautifully cold!

Here in Sweden it is unusually warm and we have a distinct lack of snow - even the snowdrops are out! :)

Did 1-3. 4. We live in Oregon. Our first day of Spring was rainy, but I still went and planted some Blueberry bushes :) We had a bit of sun now and then peaking through the clouds. I love that the buds are starting to bloom and the daffodils are out. My friend has this gorgeous flowering quince in his front yard and all the humming birds were out buzzing around it. It was lovely. My email is websurfergirl19 AT hotmail DOT com if I win. Thanks!

The Winner of the Free Martinmas and Thanksgiving Festival E-Book!!!

Congratulations to Serena who is the winner of a free copy of Little Acorn Learning's  latest festival e-book for Martinmas and Thanksgiving (Serena please contact us at info (at) littleacornlearning.com with your email to send your e-book).  Her comment was randomly chosen from yesterday's post:

"This is our first year celebrating Martinmas. We spent a morning last week sharing the story of St. Martin and his cloak and making lanterns. This week we will have our lantern walk, sing songs, and share a meal with our extended family. I am so excited to be celebrating this year and plan to make it a new tradition in our family." - Serena

We LOVED reading all of the wonderful ways you and your family will be celebrating Martinmas this coming week.  Please be sure to head over to Little Acorn Learning and grab a copy of this very full and heart-warming book.  A ton of love and energy was put into it and we truly appreciate your support.

Here are some of the ways our members will celebrate with their families this year.  We hope it will inspire you:

i loved reading this blog post (congrats on new stove!). we have never done much more than make our lanterns and go on our lantern walk with our classmates. but we do sing the martinmas songs all weekend long and try to be mindful of what st martin did, his kindness to the beggar as a metaphor for what we can do in our own lives. but i would love to read your book as we could certainly use some new ideas! enjoy your cozy stove!

There are so many lovely ways to celebrate Martinmas, I tend to get overwhelmed with trying to do it all. Last week our homeschool co-op made beautiful paper mache lanterns. This week we are gathering clothes and toys to donate, and on the night of our lantern walk we'll have a bonfire with hot apple cider before taking to the woods with our songs and lanterns. I'm looking forward to this soul-warming ritual. It's going to be a chilly walk, though!

In Germany we made lanterns at Kindergarten or elementare school and mostly the church communities organizer a huge lantern walk through the village streets. The local Brass Band and a Saint Martin in his red coat on his white horse would lead the walk. The band played Martinmas songs and people sang along. At the end Martin would do a little play and part his coat to give it to the beggar. Children got "Martinmas geese", little cakes to share with each other like Martin did. Geese because there is a legend about him hiding in a geese barn when he die not want to become bishop -too modest- but the cackling of the geese gave him away and people found him...Sometimes there would also be a Martinmas fire and people would drink hot cider as well...

Sorry if this gets posted twice.

This will be our first year celebrating Martinmas and I'm pretty excited about it.

We will make lanterns, go for a walk singing the songs we learned, have apple cider, bake gluten free cookies, and give away items that we no longer need to a local womens and childrens shelter.

I hope that my little one enjoys it!

This is our first year celebrating Martinmas and I am excited to teach my kids about St Martin and the biblical tie-ins of the good Samaritan and the "whatever you do for the least of these, you do for me" passage. We are also planning a lantern walk with homemade lanterns, some baking, and yummy food.

One year, my son's kindergarten class celebrated at their teacher's home. We had stories & songs by the bonfire, homemade play dough for the kids, a beautiful potluck dinner. Then we strolled through the neighborhood with our handmade lanterns, singing our lantern songs door to door for the neighbors to enjoy. It was a very memorable Martinmas celebration.

We read a story about Martin and talk about being a bright light in the world. We make different lanterns every year and walk down our gravel road singing Martinmas songs carrying our lanterns. This year we were going to make felt lanterns but I just broke my arm so we may modify our plans this year!

We started painting our paper for our lanterns yesterday and will assemble them on Tuesday. We plan on making a chicken and vegetable soup and having almond horseshoe cookies for dessert. We will walk with our lanterns (weather pending) and sit around the fire table and probably roast a couple marshmallows. We still have our clay pipes from our Weckmann when I was in elementary school in Germany. I always enjoyed St Martin's Day, I am very happy to share this time with my boys

We talk about the story of St Martin sharing his coat, and how we can share our warmth and light to others. So we spend the day preparing treats or small gifts to share with our neighbors, then as the sun recedes we light lanterns and walk to our friends homes sharing our light with them. The first year we did it my 3 year old daughter said, "Mom, I loved sharing light with my friends, my heart feels warm." I knew it was a tradition to keep!

After listening to a short story of St. Martin, we walk with our Waldorf community, the younger folk, with lanterns and singing through one of our local parks. We decorate lanterns and learn songs in the weeks beforehand. We walk quietly and reverently through the park, stopping to sing along the way.

Love your woodburning stove! My in-laws also have one in their house and it is the only source of heat. It feels like a campfire indoors! My children attend a Waldorf school and we celebrate by making lanterns in class and at home. Last year I bought beeswax and we dipped balloons into it, quickly pressed leaves against the wax, and dipped again--it was so fun. The lower grades will have a lantern walk on the 20th around the neighborhood. Happy Martinmas!

In Italy this is the time to eat chestnuts and open the new wine thereby celebrating both the chestnut and grape harvest. An Indian Summer at this time of year is known as a Saint Martin Summer - l'estate di San Martino. In some areas of the country children do a type of trick or treating. Tania

We are new to Waldorf traditions and last year were fortunate to celebrate our first Martinmas! Our daughters daycare family invited the children and their families for soup, cider and making little watercolor lanterns. When then bundled up and went for a walk in the neighborhood singing the Lantern Walk song. It was so sweet! We are lucky to be doing that again this year. I'm excited to learn more of the Waldorf traditions and would love to dive into this book.
