This idea originated from something similar out of the book The Children's Year. In the book, they actually fill up the base of the orange with vegetable oil after putting a wick with holder into the bottom. We wanted to use up some leftover beeswax sheets and our beeswax sun so we did things a little bit differently.
First I cut an orange in half and used a spoon to hollow out the contents. Then, we used a small knife to cut a circle out on top as well as designs into the rest of our lantern. This is amazingly simple to do and you could get very creative with your design or keep things more simple like we did.

Then I found a half a sheet of leftover beeswax for candle-making and I cut it into a long triangle - put a wick at the base and rolled it up to make a very small candle.
The children made beeswax suns this past month so we used one for the base of our candle - using a lighter to soften the wax at the bottom of the candle, I then adhered it to the beeswax sun and placed it inside our new lantern.

this is genius! it would also nice for winter solstice.. bringing the light during the dark time of the year and when oranges are in season.
