Weaving Sticks

Up and down

Up and down

We are weaving on a stick

Up and down

Up and down

We are weaving very quick

~Jennifer Tan of Syrendell

What do you do with a 'Y' shaped stick? You turn it into a piece of art. That's what. Find one.. pick it up .. and wrap it with anything cool, stringy and colorful that you can find - then display it on your wall, your windowsill, your front step... anywhere.

See the weaver sit at her loom,
Quietly humming the weaving tune.
The shuttle flies from left to right,
Swift as a swallow darting in flight.

Through the warp and the weft her busy hands go,
Under and over, now to and now fro,
Weaving a pattern of dark and of light,
Till a weavework is finished of joy and delight.

Weaving Goodbye

My life is but a weaving,
between my God and me,
I do not choose the colors,
He worketh steadily.

Ofttimes he weaveth sorrow,
and I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper,
and I the underside.

Not till the loom is silent,
and the shuttles cease to fly,
Will God unroll the canvas,
and explain the reasons why

The dark threads are as needful
in the skillful weaver's hand
As threads of gold and silver
in the pattern He has planned.

"A God's eye is a yarn weaving and a Huichol spiritual object. The Ojo de Dios or God's eye is a ritual tool, magical object, and cultural symbol evoking the weaving motif and its spiritual associations. For the Huichol peoples of western Mexico, the God's Eye is symbolic of the power of seeing and understanding that which is unknown and unknowable, The Mystery. The four points represent the elemental processes earth, fire, air, and water." ~Wikipedia
Maia's end of the year school party was so much fun. I organized the craft for the event and decided to teach the children how to weave God's Eyes with yarns and ribbons.
It took some time to get the hang of and I was lucky to have many moms and dads there to help work in groups...
But once they got going - they really loved it.
I love seeing boys create things with their hands... and break gender norms and feel good about choosing beautiful pastels - even (gasp) PINK! when creating...
These boys were amazing.
Maia will really miss her first grade friends this year and we were very lucky she had such kind teachers to help guide her. We are looking forward to a really fun summer!
